Study in Bosnia from Pakistan: the direct answer
To study in Bosnia from Pakistan, you choose an English-taught programme at a state-accredited university, receive an admission and a certified invitation letter, apply for a visa D at the Bosnian embassy in Islamabad and register for a residence permit within your first weeks in the country. The whole route usually takes three to four months from first documents to first lecture.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a European, Bologna-system country of about 3.2 million people between Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. Places are awarded independent of your high-school grades at most universities, fees are a fraction of Western Europe and you are two hours by air from Istanbul. For a family in Lahore, Karachi or Peshawar the question is rarely "can my child get in?" but "will the degree count at home?". We answer both below.
Why students choose to study in Bosnia from Pakistan
Pakistani students choose Bosnia and Herzegovina for three reasons: low fees for a European degree, a Muslim-majority capital where daily life feels familiar, and English-taught MBBS at public universities with their own teaching hospitals.
- Cost: MBBS in English at the University of East Sarajevo in Foča costs €3,500 a year, at the University of Banja Luka €4,500. Few European countries come close.
- Daily life: in Sarajevo, Zenica and Tuzla, halal food is the default, the call to prayer is part of the city soundtrack and Friday prayers are no logistical puzzle. In Banja Luka and Foča you cook a little more yourself, and many of our Pakistani students like the quiet.
- Europe on the doorstep: Zagreb, Belgrade and Dubrovnik are a bus ride away, Vienna and Istanbul a short flight.
- Old ties: Pakistan has an embassy in Sarajevo, and Bosnians tend to meet Pakistani students with real warmth.
What we see in practice: the Pakistani students who settle fastest are the ones who arrive with a few words of Bosnian and a plan for their first winter. Sarajevo in January is grey and cold, often below zero for weeks. Bring a proper coat from home or budget for one in the first week.

Costs: low-cost study in Europe for Pakistani students
Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the most realistic options for low-cost study in Europe for Pakistani students: a full year including tuition starts at roughly €8,500, about PKR 2.6 million, for MBBS in Foča.
| Cost item | In euro | In PKR (approx.) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition, MBBS in English | €3,500 to 13,200 / year | 1.09 to 4.11 million | Public universities at the lower end |
| Tuition, English bachelor | €1,534 to 8,000 / year | 0.48 to 2.49 million | Depends on subject and university |
| Room or shared flat | €150 to 350 / month | 47,000 to 109,000 | Sarajevo most expensive, Foča and Tuzla cheapest |
| Food, transport, phone, utilities | €250 to 400 / month | 78,000 to 125,000 | Cooking at home keeps this low |
| Visa D, residence permit, translations | about €300 to 500 once | 93,000 to 156,000 | Plus health insurance |
Tuition is set in euro or in convertible marks (KM), which are pegged at 1 € = 1.95583 KM, so the only currency risk you carry is the rupee. Families who paid the first instalment when the rupee was weaker know the feeling. We suggest budgeting with a 10% buffer. Full numbers by university are in our tuition fees guide, and daily prices in the capital in cost of living in Sarajevo. Partial fee waivers exist at some universities; see scholarships in Bosnia.
Bosnia student visa for Pakistani citizens
The Bosnia student visa for Pakistani citizens is a long-stay visa D, applied for in person at the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Islamabad. Pakistani passport holders need it before travelling; it is then followed by a temporary residence permit issued inside Bosnia.
- Invitation letter: your university issues it, and the Service for Foreigners' Affairs in Bosnia certifies it (50 KM, about €26, often paid by the faculty).
- Visa D application in Islamabad: passport, form, photo, certified invitation letter, admission letter, proof of accommodation and funds, travel health insurance and a police character certificate with apostille from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Decision: usually two to six weeks; the consular fee is typically around €95, payable as the embassy requires.
- Arrival: register your address within 48 hours (the "white card").
- Residence permit: apply at the field office in your university city, fee 150 KM (about €77), renewed every academic year.
Proof of funds
Proof of funds for Bosnia means showing that you can cover living costs for your stay. For the residence permit the benchmark is 400 KM (about €205, roughly PKR 64,000) per month, usually shown as a balance in a Bosnian bank account or a scholarship certificate. For the visa D, the embassy decides what it accepts; a Pakistani bank statement with a stable six-month history plus a sponsor letter from a parent is what we usually prepare. Large deposits made a week before the appointment raise questions.
Flights from Pakistan to Bosnia
Students from Pakistan fly to Bosnia and Herzegovina with one stop, usually via Istanbul or Dubai, and land in Sarajevo.
- Via Istanbul: Turkish Airlines flies from Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi to Istanbul, and several daily flights continue to Sarajevo with Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and AJet.
- Via Dubai: flydubai connects Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and other Pakistani cities with Dubai and runs about six flights a week from Dubai to Sarajevo.
- Via Doha: Qatar Airways is a common choice to reach Europe; from Doha you connect onwards through Istanbul or a European hub such as Vienna or Frankfurt.
Total travel time is usually 9 to 14 hours. Students in Banja Luka or Mostar either take the bus from Sarajevo (about four and two and a half hours) or we arrange a transfer.
Recognition back home: PMDC and HEC
A Bosnian degree is recognised in Pakistan through a home-country procedure: the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) for doctors and dentists, and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for most other degrees. These are Pakistani procedures you complete after graduation; they say nothing about how universities are approved in Bosnia.
For MBBS and BDS graduates
- Before you leave: PMDC has tightened its rules for Pakistanis studying medicine abroad. In 2026 this includes passing MDCAT before enrolling and registering with PMDC before departure. Check the current PMDC notice for your intake year.
- The medical school: PMDC expects the foreign institution to be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and recognised for its purposes. Verify the exact university and programme on the PMDC list before you sign anything.
- After graduation: you sit the National Registration Examination (NRE), Step I and Step II. Only after passing both does PMDC issue registration, which you need to practise or start a house job in Pakistan.
For other degrees
Bachelor and master degrees go through HEC degree equivalence. Bologna credits (ECTS) and a diploma supplement in English make the file straightforward. More on this in degree recognition, and why only state-accredited universities matter in non-accredited universities in Bosnia.
