About the university

Overview

International Burch University (IBU) is a private university in Ilidža, the western district of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Founded in 2008, it has been owned since then by Stirling Education, an education group with its head office in London, which is why IBU describes itself as a British-owned, entrepreneurial university. All teaching is in English. IBU runs three faculties: the Faculty of Engineering, Natural and Medical Sciences, the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Education and Humanities. Together they offer 13 bachelor programmes, more than 25 master tracks and nine doctoral programmes. The best-known English-taught offer for international applicants is the six-year Dentistry programme, alongside Information Technology, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Genetics and Bioengineering, Architecture, Management and International Relations.

For the 2026/27 academic year, international students pay €10,000 per year for Dentistry and 10,000 KM per year (about €5,100) for most other bachelor programmes. The university is state-accredited in Bosnia and Herzegovina and keeps a scholarship fund of 1,000,000 KM. The average scholarship covers half of the tuition. More than 5,000 students have received one so far.

The campus sits on Francuske revolucije street in Ilidža, a few minutes from Sarajevo International Airport and at the end of the tram line that runs straight into the old town. One compact site holds lecture halls, a dental training clinic with modern treatment units, genetics and microbiology laboratories, IT and Mac labs, film and photo studios, a startup incubator and a library that was modernised in 2025. Over 30 student clubs and the university basketball club KK Igman Burch keep campus life busy.

We at Study in Bosnia help you secure a study place at International Burch University, prepare your documents and the recognition of your school certificate, and organise your student visa, residence permit and a room or flat. Our local office in Bosnia and Herzegovina stays in contact with you after arrival.

All three faculties share one campus on Francuske revolucije street in Ilidža. The long brick-and-white buildings frame green lawns, so you do not commute between faculties. Lecture halls, labs, studios, the cafeteria and the administration are all a few minutes apart on foot.

The library was modernised in 2025 into a Library and Learning Commons with long reading tables, quiet corners for individual study and a lounge area. In October 2026 it joined the national library information network of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Students now borrow from partner libraries and use their reading rooms and academic databases as well. Staff help with literature searches and research methods.

Tuition and living costs

What studying here costs

Tuition fees 2026/27 (international students)

  • Dentistry: €10,000 per year (6 years)
  • Film and Video Production, Game and Interaction Design: €10,000 per year (4 years)
  • All other bachelor programmes (IT, engineering, genetics, architecture, management, international relations, economics, English, design, PR): approx. €5,100 per year (10,000 KM)
  • Master (engineering, economics and social sciences): approx. €5,100 per year (10,000 KM), approx. €10,200 for a two-year master (20,000 KM)
  • Master (Faculty of Education and Humanities): approx. €5,100 for the one-year master (10,000 KM)
  • PhD: approx. €13,300 for the full three years (26,000 KM)
  • English preparatory programme: approx. €5,100 for the year (10,000 KM)

Scholarships lower these amounts for many students. IBU awards partial and full tuition exemptions to high-achieving students, and the average scholarship covers 50% of the fee. When you apply for the visa, the university asks for a first instalment of the tuition fee.

One-off costs

Plan a modest budget for translations and apostilles, the recognition of your certificate, courier fees for the invitation letter, the visa fee, the residence permit and health insurance. Dentistry students also buy instruments and protective clothing over the course of the programme.

Monthly living costs in Ilidža and Sarajevo

  • Room in a shared flat: €150 to 250
  • Studio or one-bedroom flat in Ilidža: €300 to 400
  • Utilities and internet (share): €40 to 70
  • Food and groceries: €200 to 250; a lunch in a local restaurant costs about €5 to 7, a portion of ćevapi about €4
  • Public transport: tram ticket about €0.90, monthly pass about €15 to 30
  • Phone: €8 to 15 for a prepaid plan with data
  • Leisure and other: €50 to 100

In total, most students live on about €500 to 700 per month.

Our estimate for the full programme

Our estimate for Dentistry: tuition of €10,000 × 6 years = €60,000, plus living costs of €600 × 12 months × 6 years = €43,200, gives about €103,200 for the complete degree, before scholarships.

Our estimate for a three-year bachelor such as Information Technology: about €5,100 × 3 = €15,300 tuition plus €600 × 12 × 3 = €21,600 living costs, so roughly €37,000 in total.

Scholarships change this picture. A 50% scholarship would cut the tuition part of these figures in half.

City and student life

Living and studying here

Ilidža is Sarajevo's green western end. The district grew up around thermal springs used since Roman times. Its centre is a long tree-lined avenue, Velika aleja, that leads to Vrelo Bosne, the park where the Bosna river rises from dozens of springs below Mount Igman. Students jog there, cycle there and spend summer evenings by the water. It feels calm.

The IBU campus is part of this quieter world, yet the city is close. Tram line 3 starts at the Ilidža terminus and runs along the main valley axis past Marijin Dvor to Baščaršija, the Ottoman old town, in about 40 minutes. Local buses connect the campus with the tram stop, and taxis in Sarajevo are cheap by European standards. Sarajevo International Airport in Butmir is about 10 minutes away by car, with direct flights to Vienna, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Zurich and many Gulf cities.

We usually advise students to look for rooms in central Ilidža, Stup or Otoka. Rents there are lower than in the city centre, you can walk or take a short bus ride to campus, and the tram line gives you direct access to the old town at weekends.

Sarajevo has a continental climate. Summers are warm and dry with around 27 °C, autumn is long and golden, and winters bring snow from December to February. Snow is good news for students. Bjelašnica and Jahorina, both 1984 Olympic venues, are under an hour away, and Igman rises directly above Ilidža.

Daily life is affordable. A coffee costs about €1 to 1.50, a plate of ćevapi around €4 and a monthly gym membership around €25. Sarajevo is considered a safe city for students, and people are used to hearing English in cafés and shops, especially among the younger generation.

The calendar is full. The Sarajevo Film Festival in August turns the old town into an open-air cinema, Sarajevo Winter brings theatre and concerts, and Baščaršija Nights fill July with music. On campus, more than 30 clubs, Model United Nations conferences, career days and the KK Igman Burch basketball team give you plenty to join.

Travel is easy too. Mostar is about two hours away by train through the Neretva canyon, the Adriatic coast at Makarska or Dubrovnik four to five hours by car, and Zagreb and Belgrade six to seven hours by bus.

If you compare options in the same city, the public University of Sarajevo also offers degrees in English, including Dentistry at its Faculty of Dentistry in the city centre. International Burch University is the choice for students who prefer a private, fully English-speaking campus with all faculties on one site. Our team in Bosnia knows both and helps you decide.
