Is a Bosnian degree recognised? The short answer

Is a Bosnian degree recognised abroad? Yes: a degree from one of the 21 state-accredited universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina is recognised in the EU, the UK, the USA, the Gulf states and Turkey through each country's standard procedure for foreign qualifications. What changes from country to country is the paperwork and, for doctors, dentists and pharmacists, an extra licensing exam.

Two questions decide how smooth your recognition will be. First, is your university state-accredited? Second, is your profession regulated in the country where you want to work? If the answers are yes and no, recognition is mostly a matter of documents. If the answers are yes and yes, recognition is a documents step followed by an exam step. Our complete guide to studying in Bosnia covers the universities themselves.

Why Bosnian degrees are easy to read abroad

Bosnian degrees follow the same European architecture as degrees from Croatia, Austria or Germany. That is the main reason recognition offices can assess them without guesswork.

  • Bologna since 2003. Bosnia and Herzegovina joined the Bologna Process in 2003. Degrees are structured as bachelor, master and doctorate, plus integrated programmes such as Medicine.
  • ECTS credits. A bachelor carries 180 or 240 ECTS, a master 60 to 120, Medicine and Dental Medicine 360. Credit transfer between European universities works on the same scale.
  • Diploma supplement. Universities issue a diploma supplement, usually also in English, that lists every course, its credits and grade, and explains the national system. Recognition offices ask for it first.
  • Lisbon Recognition Convention. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a party, as are almost all European countries. The convention obliges them to recognise foreign degrees unless they can show a substantial difference.
  • EU candidate status. Bosnia and Herzegovina has been an EU candidate country since December 2022. Until accession, its degrees are treated as non-EU qualifications, so the EU's automatic recognition for doctors under Directive 2005/36/EC does not yet apply. You go through the individual route instead.
What we see in practice: the graduates who wait longest for recognition are rarely the ones with a weak degree. They are the ones who threw away their diploma supplement or cannot get a course syllabus five years after graduating. Keep everything.

State accreditation is the precondition

Recognition abroad starts with recognition at home. A destination country only assesses a Bosnian degree if the issuing university is state-accredited in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A diploma from an unaccredited institution or an unlicensed "branch campus" is not assessed at all, however good the teaching was.

All 21 universities on our university finder are state-accredited. Before you enrol anywhere else, read our article on non-accredited universities in Bosnia, which shows how to check an institution in five minutes.

Regulated vs non-regulated professions

A regulated profession is one you may only practise with a state licence, such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, law, teaching in state schools or some engineering titles. A non-regulated profession, such as economics, computer science, business or psychology outside clinical practice, needs no licence; employers decide for themselves.

  • Non-regulated: you usually need only an academic recognition or a statement of comparability, and often not even that. A software developer from the International Burch University applying in the Netherlands is judged on skills; a statement helps with visas and salary bands.
  • Regulated: you need professional recognition from the authority that licenses your profession. For doctors that is a medical authority, and almost every country adds an exam for graduates from outside its own system.

Medical degree Bosnia recognition: country notes

A medical degree from Bosnia is recognised in the same way as any non-EU medical degree: the diploma is checked, and you prove your knowledge in an exam. The notes below add what the table leaves out. For a deeper look at the medical programmes themselves, our sister company Medschool Experts covers studying Medicine in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Germany: Bosnian diploma recognition for doctorsKnowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) + Approbation
+

Bosnian diploma recognition in Germany runs through the authority of the federal state where you want to work. For doctors, dentists and pharmacists the route is the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung), an oral-practical exam at the level of the German final state exam, followed by Approbation. Germany has made the direct knowledge test the standard route for non-EU graduates.

On top come German at B2 and a medical-language exam at C1. What we see with graduates from Mostar or Foča: those who start German during their studies are ready for the knowledge test far sooner than those who start after graduation. Language, not medicine, is usually the bottleneck.

Other EU countriesIndividual assessment, often an exam
+

Each EU country assesses non-EU medical degrees on its own. Austria uses nostrification, Croatia and Slovenia run their own recognition procedures, and most countries add a knowledge or aptitude exam plus a language test.

United KingdomGMC registration via PLAB
+

The General Medical Council registers international graduates whose medical school is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and whose qualification it accepts. You pass PLAB 1 and PLAB 2, prove English with IELTS Academic or OET, and have your diploma verified at source.

USAECFMG certification and USMLE
+

To enter residency in the USA, you need ECFMG certification. That requires a medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with an ECFMG note, passes in USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, and the communication requirement, currently met with OET Medicine. After residency you take Step 3 and apply for a state licence. Dentists follow a separate route through an advanced-standing dental programme in the USA.

Gulf statesSaudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman
+

Gulf health authorities license doctors after primary-source verification of the diploma and a licensing exam. In Saudi Arabia that is classification with the SCFHS and the Saudi Medical Licensing Exam; in the UAE the DHA, DOH or the federal ministry, depending on the emirate. Some grades also require clinical experience after graduation. See our guide for students from Saudi Arabia.

TurkeyYÖK equivalence and the STS exam
+

Turkish graduates abroad apply to YÖK for equivalence (denklik). For Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy the usual outcome is a requirement to pass the STS level-determination exam, which is held in Turkish twice a year. Documents need an apostille and a sworn Turkish translation. Medicine and Dental Medicine at the International University of Sarajevo are taught with years 4 to 6 in Istanbul. More in our guide for students from Turkey.

India, Pakistan and NigeriaFMGE, NRE and the MDCN assessment
+

India: the NMC's foreign-graduate rules require a course of at least 54 months plus a 12-month internship at the same foreign university, taught in English, and eligibility for a licence in the country of study. Graduates then sit the FMGE, which remains the qualifying exam until the NExT is introduced, and complete a 12-month internship in India. Details in our guide for students from India.

Pakistan: foreign graduates sit the PMDC National Registration Exam and then do their house job. PMDC also sets rules for Pakistani students before they go abroad, so check them before enrolling. See our guide from Pakistan.

Nigeria: the MDCN runs an assessment exam for foreign-trained medical and dental graduates, followed by housemanship. See our guide from Nigeria.

Bosnia degree recognition in the EU for non-medical subjects

For non-regulated subjects, Bosnia degree recognition in the EU is usually a short paper procedure. You send the degree, the diploma supplement and a translation to the national recognition centre, and receive a statement that places your degree in the national system, for example "comparable to a German bachelor's degree". Many employers do not even ask for it. Master's admissions offices check your ECTS and grades directly.

A bachelor in Computer Science from the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology or in Data Science and AI from the University of Sarajevo is read in Vienna, Berlin or Amsterdam like any other 240-ECTS European bachelor.

Apostille and translations

An apostille is a certificate that confirms a public document is genuine, so that it is accepted abroad without further legalisation. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, and the apostille for a diploma is issued by the competent court in Bosnia.

Countries that are not party to the convention, such as some Gulf states, ask for legalisation through the foreign ministry and their embassy instead. Translations are usually done by a sworn translator in the destination country or in Bosnia. Order the apostille while you are still in Bosnia; doing it from abroad takes weeks longer.

FAQ: is a Bosnian degree recognised abroad?

Is a Bosnian degree recognised in the EU?

Yes, through each EU country's procedure for non-EU qualifications. Bologna structure, ECTS and the diploma supplement make the assessment straightforward. For regulated professions such as medicine, the country adds its own exam, for example the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) and Approbation in Germany.

Is Bosnian diploma recognition in Germany possible for doctors?

Yes. Doctors with a Bosnian degree apply for Approbation to the authority of the federal state where they want to work. The route is the knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung) plus German at B2 and a medical-language exam at C1.

Is a medical degree from Bosnia recognised in the UK and USA?

Yes, through the routes for international graduates. In the UK you register with the GMC after PLAB 1 and PLAB 2. In the USA you need ECFMG certification, USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, residency and then a state licence.

Does EU candidate status mean automatic recognition?

Not yet. Automatic recognition of medical degrees under Directive 2005/36/EC applies to degrees from EU member states. Until Bosnia and Herzegovina joins, its degrees follow the individual route for non-EU qualifications.

Does Bosnia issue apostilles for diplomas?

Yes. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, and the competent court issues the apostille. Countries outside the convention ask for embassy legalisation instead.

Can Indian students practise in India with a Bosnian medical degree?

Yes, if the programme meets the NMC's foreign-graduate rules on duration, internship, language and licence eligibility. Graduates then pass the FMGE and complete a 12-month internship in India. We check the programme structure against the current rules before you enrol.

What is the most important factor for recognition?

State accreditation of the university. Without it, no destination country will assess the degree. All 21 universities listed on study-in-bosnia.com are state-accredited.
