Study in Bosnia from India: the direct answer
To study in Bosnia from India, you pick an English-taught programme at a state-accredited university, receive an admission and a certified invitation letter, apply for a visa D at the Bosnian embassy in New Delhi and file for a residence permit in your first weeks in the country. Plan three to four months from collecting documents to your first lecture.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a small European country of about 3.2 million people on the Balkan peninsula, part of the Bologna system and an EU candidate since 2022. Most Indian families find us after comparing the usual MBBS destinations and asking a simple question: is there a European option that does not cost what Germany or Ireland cost? Bosnia is one of the answers, and for engineering and business it is often the cheapest English-taught route into a European degree.
Why students choose to study in Bosnia from India
Indian students choose Bosnia and Herzegovina for European degrees at low fees, small classes in English and a calm, affordable student life two hours by air from Istanbul.
- Price of a European degree: Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in English at the University of Sarajevo costs €1,534 a year, about ₹1.6 lakh. Medicine in English at the University of East Sarajevo in Foča costs €3,500.
- Bologna credits: ECTS make a later master in the EU, the UK or back in India far easier to plan.
- Small cohorts: international groups are small, so professors know your name by the second semester.
- Daily life: a shared flat in Tuzla or Banja Luka costs €150 to 250 a month, and the supermarkets in larger cities stock rice, lentils and spices. Vegetarian students cook more than in Bengaluru or Pune, and most enjoy it.
What we see in practice: Indian students who do well in Bosnia are rarely the ones who chose purely on price. They picked a city that suited them. Sarajevo for an international crowd, Banja Luka for a green, orderly mid-sized city, Foča for students who want nothing between them and their anatomy books. Compare the cities in best student cities in Bosnia.

Bosnia student visa for Indian citizens
The Bosnia student visa for Indian citizens is a long-stay visa D, applied for in person at the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in New Delhi. Indian passport holders need it before travelling, and it is followed by a temporary residence permit issued inside Bosnia.
- Invitation letter: your university issues it, and the Service for Foreigners' Affairs certifies it (50 KM, about €26, often paid by the faculty).
- Visa D application in New Delhi: passport, form, photo, certified invitation letter, admission letter, proof of accommodation and funds, travel health insurance and a police clearance certificate with apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs.
- Decision: usually two to six weeks; the consular fee is typically around €95, payable as the embassy requires.
- Arrival: register your address within 48 hours (the "white card").
- Residence permit: apply at the field office in your university city, 150 KM (about €77), renewed each academic year.
Proof of funds
Proof of funds for Bosnia means showing that you can cover your living costs. For the residence permit the benchmark is 400 KM (about €205, roughly ₹22,000) per month, usually as a balance in a Bosnian bank account or a scholarship certificate. For the visa D, the embassy decides what it accepts; we usually prepare an Indian bank statement with a steady six-month history, a parent's sponsorship letter and, where there is one, the education loan sanction letter.
Flights from India to Bosnia
Students from India fly to Bosnia and Herzegovina with one stop, usually via Istanbul or Dubai, and land in Sarajevo.
- Via Istanbul: Turkish Airlines flies from Delhi and Mumbai to Istanbul, and several daily flights continue to Sarajevo with Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and AJet.
- Via Dubai: Emirates and flydubai connect the major Indian cities with Dubai, and flydubai runs about six flights a week from Dubai to Sarajevo.
- Via Doha: Qatar Airways is a common way to reach Europe from India; from Doha you connect onwards through Istanbul or a European hub such as Vienna or Frankfurt.
Door to door, expect 10 to 16 hours. Banja Luka is about four hours by bus from Sarajevo, Mostar about two and a half.
Recognition back in India: NMC rules and AIU
Recognition back in India is a home-country procedure: the National Medical Commission (NMC) sets the conditions for doctors trained abroad, and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) issues equivalence for most other degrees. These are Indian procedures; they do not describe how universities are approved in Bosnia.
NMC rules for foreign medical graduates
The Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 (FMGL) list the conditions a foreign medical degree must meet for an Indian licence. Check each one against your exact programme, in writing, before you enrol:
The FMGL conditions to checkFrom the 2021 regulations and related NMC rules+
- Duration: at least 54 months of medical study.
- Internship abroad: at least 12 months of internship in the same foreign institution where you studied.
- Same institution: the whole course, training and internship completed at one foreign institution.
- Language: the course taught in English throughout.
- Licence in the country of study: you must be registered with, or eligible for a licence from, the regulator in the country where you studied, on the same terms as its own citizens.
- Curriculum: the subjects listed in the regulations covered in your degree.
- Back in India: a further 12 months of supervised internship in India after passing the qualifying exam.
- Before you go: NEET-UG qualification is required for Indian students who plan to study medicine abroad.
NExT and FMGE in 2026: the National Exit Test (NExT) is planned to replace the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination, but it has not been rolled out. In August 2026 the NMC published a draft that keeps FMGE as the qualifying exam for foreign medical graduates until NExT starts. Check which exam applies to your batch when you graduate.
We do not decide whether a programme meets these conditions; the NMC does. What we do is get you the programme's structure, internship model and language of instruction from the faculty in writing, so you can check it before paying a deposit.
