City and student life
Bijeljina is a flat, open town of about 100,000 people in the Semberija plain, surrounded by fields and orchards. The centre is compact, with a long pedestrian zone, cafés and markets selling local produce at low prices.
The University of Bijeljina is on Pavlovića put, a short ride from the centre. Many students cycle, because the town is completely flat. Belgrade is about 2 hours by car, and the nearest airports are Belgrade and Tuzla.
The climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters. Living costs are among the lowest in Bosnia and Herzegovina, around €400 to 550 per month for most international students. Bijeljina is safe and quiet, and the ethno village Stanišići and the Drina river are close by for weekends.
For accommodation we advise a room in a shared flat near the centre or on the way to the campus. Flats are affordable, but quality varies, so view before you pay and ask for a written contract for your residence permit. If you are still abroad, our local office in Bosnia can view rooms for you and send photos, so you do not need an extra trip before the semester. Plan to arrive one or two weeks early: registering your address and applying for the residence permit take a few visits to the authorities.
Other universities in Bijeljina: Sinergija University and Slobomir P University. Both are worth a look if you compare options in the region.
