About the university
The International University of Sarajevo (IUS) is a private, state-accredited university in Ilidža, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, founded in 2004 by the Foundation for Education Development Sarajevo. Everything runs in English. IUS offers 23 bachelor programmes in six faculties, from Computer Sciences and Engineering, Software Engineering and Architecture to Economics, Psychology, Law and the new six-year Medicine and Dental Medicine double diploma programmes. Most English bachelor programmes cost €5,400 or €6,600 a year for international students in 2026/27.
About 2,000 students from more than 45 countries study on one compact campus at Hrasnička cesta 15. They are taught by more than 200 academic and administrative staff from over 12 countries. The campus has two main buildings with about 24,000 m² of floor space, laboratories, a library with more than 32,000 volumes, an art gallery, sports fields and two dormitories, one for women and one for men.
Bachelor degrees take four years and 240 ECTS, master degrees one or two years (60 or 120 ECTS) and doctoral degrees three years (180 ECTS). Students whose English is not yet strong enough start with the English Language School, a full preparatory year directly on campus. A large network of double diploma agreements with Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul University, Marmara University and the University of Health Sciences Türkiye gives many programmes a second degree.
We at Study in Bosnia work with IUS applicants every year. We check your documents, organise translations and the recognition of your school-leaving certificate, submit the application and then help with the student visa, residence permit and a room near the campus.

Faculties and campus

This is the youngest IUS faculty. It was inaugurated in May 2025, together with the double diploma agreement with the University of Health Sciences Türkiye. Its office is on the first floor of Building B. The faculty runs two programmes, Medicine and Dental Medicine, each with six years and 360 ECTS.
Preclinical teaching in years 1 to 3 takes place on the Sarajevo campus in modern laboratories for anatomy, biology, chemistry and microbiology. Students also gain early practical exposure, for example at the Institute for Emergency Medical Aid of Sarajevo Canton. The clinical years follow in Istanbul at the partner university's hospitals. Groups are small.

The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (FENS) is the largest faculty at IUS. Its dean's office sits on the first floor of Building A, next to the Red Amphitheatre, the main lecture hall of the campus. FENS has two departments: Engineering, with Architecture, Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering, Computer Sciences and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering and Industrial Engineering, and Natural Sciences, with Genetics and Bioengineering.

Six FENS programmes hold international programme accreditation. Students work in electronics, computer, mechanical and molecular biology labs from the first semesters. Most engineering programmes can be combined with a double diploma from Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul University or Marmara University.
The Faculty of Business and Administration (FBA) has its office on the first floor of Building B. It is organised in two departments. The Department of Economics and Management covers Economics, International Business and Finance, Management and Hospitality and Tourism Management. The Department of Political Science and International Relations runs Political Science and International Relations as well as International Relations and Diplomacy.
Internships of at least 25 working days, optional minors and a graduation project are part of the bachelor programmes. The Balkan Studies Center on campus works with the political science department, for example on the Shuttle Diplomacy Talks series with diplomats and policymakers.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) sits on the second floor of Building B. Its three departments are Arts (Visual Arts and Visual Communications Design), Social Sciences (Psychology, Political Science) and Cultural Studies (English Language and Literature, Media and Communication, Cultural Studies).
Design and media students use the MAC Studio and an iMac lab on the first floor of Building B. The IUS Art Gallery shows student and guest exhibitions. Psychology is one of the most requested programmes and continues into a master in Clinical Psychology.
The Faculty of Law was founded in 2015 and has its office on the second floor of Building A. It teaches a four-year bachelor in Law in English with a comparative approach and Socratic-style seminars. Students take part in national, regional and international moot court competitions.
Two master programmes follow: Comparative Public Law, with tracks in European Union Public Law and Integrations and in Cyber Law, and Comparative Private Law, with a Law and Business track.
The Faculty of Education trains teachers. Its office is on the second floor of Building B. The Department of Education and Information Technologies runs Computer Education and Instructional Technology, and the Department of Languages and Literature runs English Language and Literature, Teaching and Turkish Language and Literature, Teaching. Master studies can be taken in distance-learning mode, and a PhD is offered in English Language and Literature, Teaching.

The English Language School (ELS) on the ground floor of Building B prepares students for English-medium study in four eight-week levels. It was the first internationally accredited university English foundation programme in the Balkans. The library on the third floor of Building B holds more than 32,000 volumes and has 171 seats in a main reading room, group study, thesis and PhD rooms and a computer room.

Two dormitories are within walking distance of the lecture halls. The Mehmet Çakır Female Dormitory, opened in 2010, houses 159 students in 51 rooms from doubles to five-person rooms, each with its own bathroom. The Plavi Leptir Male Dormitory has VIP double, double, three-person and four or five-person rooms, breakfast, laundry, study rooms and a prayer room.

All studies at IUS are in English, and if your English is not yet at degree level, you start with the preparatory year on campus.

Tuition and living costs
IUS publishes its fees for 2026/27 in two currencies: students from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the neighbouring Balkan countries pay in KM, international students in euros. The figures below are the international fees per year.
Balkan-region students pay 8,300 to 9,400 KM (approx. €4,245 to 4,805) for the regular bachelor programmes. Double diploma programmes cost the same as the regular programme. Tuition is paid in two instalments. Fees are fixed per year.
Scholarships exist for bachelor students, for example need-based, sibling (10%) or talent scholarships. They do not cover the preparatory year.
Plan for application and enrolment fees, certified translations, nostrification of your certificate, visa and residence permit fees, health insurance and a medical certificate. Together they normally stay in the low hundreds of euros.
Our estimate for an average student is about €550 per month.
These are our own estimates, not official university figures. Prices for rent in Ilidža are lower than in the city centre.
City and student life
Sarajevo is a compact capital of about 275,000 people in a green valley ringed by mountains. The IUS campus lies in Ilidža, the western district at the end of the tram line, about 13 km from Baščaršija, the Ottoman old town. Ilidža has its own calm rhythm. It is a spa town with parks, cafés and shops, and many international students live here rather than in the centre.
The most famous spot nearby is Vrelo Bosne, the spring of the Bosna river, reached along a 3.5 km tree-lined avenue that locals walk, cycle or ride by horse carriage. Ilidža tram terminus is the start of tram line 3, which runs through Novo Sarajevo and Marijin Dvor to Baščaršija in about 35 to 40 minutes. Buses on the Ilidža–Hrasnica route stop close to Hrasnička cesta. Sarajevo International Airport in Butmir is only about 4 km away, so a flight home starts with a ten-minute taxi ride.
We usually advise students to look for rooms in Ilidža, Stup or Otoka. Rent is lower than in the centre, the campus is a short bus or taxi ride away and tram 3 still takes you into town in the evening. Students who want city life every day choose Grbavica or Marijin Dvor and accept a longer commute.
By road or rail, Mostar is about two hours away, the Adriatic coast at Neum about three and a half hours. Buses to Zagreb and Belgrade take six to seven hours. Winters are cold and snowy, summers warm and sunny. Bjelašnica and Igman, the 1984 Olympic mountains, rise directly above Ilidža and are perfect for skiing and hiking.
Daily life is affordable. A coffee costs around €1.50, burek or ćevapi €3 to 6, and a monthly transport pass for students stays well under €30. Sarajevo is a safe city with a relaxed street life late into the evening. Events like the Sarajevo Film Festival in August, Jazz Fest in November and the winter festival bring people from across the region.
The campus itself is a small town. Students from over 45 countries meet in the cafeteria, the coffee shop, on the football field and the basketball court and in student clubs. A short comparison helps orientation: International Burch University, also in Ilidža, follows a similar English-language model, while IUS adds a medical faculty and four partner universities in Türkiye for double degrees.
