Faculties and campus

The Faculty of Medicine Foča is the largest unit of the university for international students. Founded in 1944 in Sarajevo, it has taught in Foča, Bosnia and Herzegovina, since 1993/94 and today sits on Studentska 5, on the slope above the town centre. The campus groups lecture halls, preclinical institutes, the library and a computer centre. Its next-door neighbour is University Hospital Foča with about 500 beds, the main teaching base, which also serves the whole upper Drina valley.

Clinical teaching covers internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology and obstetrics, neurology and ophthalmology. Since 2015 the faculty has had its own Centre for Biomedical Sciences for research, and since 2016 a Specialist Centre for Dentistry where Dentistry students treat patients. A Centre for Rehabilitation and Special Education supports the speech therapy and special education programmes. Teaching in English began in 2020/21, Dentistry in English followed in 2023/24.

Groups are small. That is the main difference from big-city faculties: professors know students by name, and you see patients early. Study in Bosnia is the official contract partner of the faculty since 2024 and has its own office in Foča, so our team is on site when you arrive, register and move in.

Foča's second faculty was founded in 1994 by the Government of Republika Srpska and the Serbian Orthodox Church. It sits on 9 May Street in the town and offers bachelor programmes in Orthodox Theology and in Theology and Pastoral Studies, a master in Interreligious Studies and Peacebuilding and a doctorate in Theology. It is the only faculty of its kind in the entity.
The faculty continues the electrical engineering tradition that began in Sarajevo in 1961 and has been based in Lukavica, East Sarajevo, since 1994/95. It shares the large campus at Vuka Karadžića 30 with the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Agriculture and the Academy of Music, roughly 3 km from Sarajevo International Airport. Its three bachelor programmes (Automation and Electronics, Electric Power Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics) are offered in Serbian and in English. In 2026 the Government of Republika Srpska allocated 5 million KM (about €2.6 million) to renovate the shared building.
Founded in 1994 in Vogošća and later moved to Lukavica, the faculty has five departments: Applied Mechanics, Production Engineering, Thermal Power and Process Machinery, Machine Design and General Subjects. Practical work happens in laboratories for CNC machine tools and CIM systems, welding and materials testing, measurement and quality control, and applied mechanics and mechatronics. Programmes: Mechanical Engineering and Wood Processing Technology at bachelor level, Mechanical Engineering at master level.
Established in 1994/95, the Faculty of Agriculture teaches agriculture in East Sarajevo and Bijeljina, forestry in Vlasenica and Mediterranean crop production in Trebinje. Its laboratories test soil fertility, animal feed and plant health. Every autumn it hosts the international agricultural symposium Agrosym on Mount Jahorina.
The Academy of Music opened in 1994/95 in Ilidža and moved to East Sarajevo in 1996. It trains performers in voice, piano, accordion, strings, flute and guitar, as well as music teachers, composers and church musicians. Its annual accordion festival draws players from across the region, and close ties with Russian academies explain a performance programme taught in Russian.

The Faculty of Law carries on the tradition of the Sarajevo law school founded in 1946. It has been seated in Pale since 1996, at Alekse Šantića 3, and has also taught in Bijeljina since 1999. Its library grows every year and covers all branches of law. Programmes run from the bachelor in Law to master and doctoral studies in public, civil and criminal law.
Founded in 1993/94, the Faculty of Economics in Pale offers Economics with five specialisations and Tourism and Hospitality Management, six master programmes and a doctorate. It publishes its own research journal and organises the Jahorina Business Forum each year.
The largest faculty by number of programmes was founded in 1993 at Alekse Šantića 1 in Pale. Sixteen bachelor programmes range from Psychology, Sociology and Pedagogy to English, German, Chinese and Russian philology, History and Archaeology, Geography, Mathematics and Physics, Political Science and Journalism. Sixteen master programmes and four doctoral fields complete the offer.
Founded in 1995 as the Faculty of Physical Culture, it trains physical education teachers and coaches in football, basketball, handball, alpine skiing, biathlon, judo and other sports. Mount Jahorina, one of the 1984 Olympic venues, is only about 15 km away. Three master programmes are also offered in English, and the faculty publishes the journal Sport and Health in English and Serbian.

The Faculty of Technology was founded in 1993/94 in Karakaj, the industrial district of Zvornik on the Drina. It works closely with industry and was named the most successful higher education institution in cooperation with business in 2012. Students train in laboratories for chemical engineering, food technology and environmental protection. The English-taught bachelor in Chemical Engineering and Technology costs €2,000 per year, and the faculty helps with accommodation and meals through the local student centre.
Established in 2005, the faculty builds on the Higher School of Foreign Trade founded in 1993. It offers Business Economics with three streams and three master programmes, which are also available in English. It publishes the journal Novi ekonomist.
Founded in 1994 as a teacher training faculty and reorganised in 2002/03, it prepares primary school and preschool teachers and teachers of technical education and informatics. It shares the higher education centre on Semberskih ratara with the Faculty of Business Economics.
The oldest unit outside Sarajevo dates back to 1976 and to a commercial school opened in Brčko in 1961. It sits on Studentska 11 and offers Economics with accounting and finance or management, plus a master in Financial and Banking Management.
Both units were founded in 1995 in Trebinje, a sunny town about 30 km from Dubrovnik, and share the address Stepe Stepanovića. The Faculty of Production and Management teaches Industrial Management, Industrial Engineering for Energy and Information Systems Engineering. The Academy of Fine Arts trains painters, sculptors, printmakers and graphic designers and closes each year with a public exhibition of student work.
Founded in 2005 in Doboj, a railway junction in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina, the faculty covers road, rail, air and postal traffic, logistics and motor vehicles across bachelor, master and doctoral level.
The newest member of the university joined in 2022 and began work in 2023. It is a research unit focused on the history of the region from the early Middle Ages to modern times.

We handle the entire admission for you. Study in Bosnia checks your eligibility first, so you know where you stand before you pay anything. We organise certified translations and the nostrification of your school certificate, prepare your documents and submit your complete application to the Faculty of Medicine Foča. As the faculty's official contract partner since 2024, we are in direct contact with the admissions office and the dean's office until you are enrolled.
After admission our office in Foča takes over: student visa, residence permit, registration, and a room or flat close to the campus. Paperwork stays with us. You focus on the start of your studies.
Tuition and living costs
Foča is the most affordable English-taught medical programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tuition and living costs are both low, and the quality of small-group teaching next to a 500-bed teaching hospital makes it the best value in the country.
One-off costs are modest. Expect an application fee, enrolment material in the first semester, the nostrification of your school certificate, certified translations, the residence permit and health insurance.
In total you should plan approx. €450 per month, with a realistic range of €400 to 550.
That is a full medical degree for less than many universities in Western Europe charge for two or three years of tuition alone. On request we offer financing solutions that cover all costs of the studies, including tuition and living expenses.
City and student life
Foča is a small university town on the Drina river in south-east Bosnia and Herzegovina, with about 15,000 inhabitants in the town itself. Students make up a visible part of daily life. You meet classmates in the cafés of the old town, at the market and on the river promenade, and the pace is calm enough to study well.
The Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital Foča lie next to each other on Studentska, a few minutes on foot from each other. From the campus the old town centre with its shops, bakeries and the Aladža mosque is roughly a 15-minute walk. We usually advise students to look for a room in the streets between the campus and the centre, because you can walk to lectures, clinical rotations and the supermarket without a car. Our local office in Foča helps you find flats and rooms in shared flats there before you arrive.
Foča is a walking town. Local buses and taxis are cheap, and a taxi ride across town costs only a few euros. Sarajevo and Sarajevo International Airport are about 75 km away, roughly 1.5 hours by bus or car. Podgorica in Montenegro is about 3 hours away, Dubrovnik and the Adriatic coast 3.5 to 4 hours, Belgrade around 6 hours and Zagreb a long day's drive.
The climate is continental. Summers are warm, often 28 to 32 °C in July and August, while winters bring frost and snow on the surrounding mountains. Food is inexpensive: a coffee costs around €1, a portion of ćevapi €4 to 5, a lunch menu €5 to 7. Foča is a safe, quiet town where students walk home at night without worry.
Nature is the big bonus. Sutjeska National Park with the Perućica primeval forest and Mount Maglić, at 2,386 m the highest peak of Bosnia and Herzegovina's Republika Srpska entity, start just south of town. The Tara and Drina rivers are famous for rafting from spring to autumn, and the hiking trails of Zelengora are a weekend trip away. In winter, the ski slopes of Jahorina are within reach.
Compared with studying medicine in Sarajevo or Mostar, Foča offers a quieter campus life and lower rent, and many students value exactly that during demanding clinical years. With our team in the town, you always have a contact person for visa, residence permit and housing questions.
