About the university
The Sarajevo School of Science and Technology (SSST) is a private, English-language university in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It opened in October 2004 as the first private university in the country and is state-accredited in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Teaching is in English. The offer covers Medicine (Doctor of Medicine, 6 years), Dentistry (Doctor of Dental Medicine, 6 years), Pharmacy (Master of Pharmacy, 5 years), Health Studies, Computer Science, Information Systems, Game Development and Design, Economics and Business, Political Science and International Relations, English Language and Film Making. For 2026/27 the annual tuition for international students starts at €7,800 (Game Development and Design) and is €13,200 for Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy.
SSST works closely with the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom. In Computer Science, Information Systems, Game Development and Design, Economics and Political Science and International Relations, the British university validates and examines the programmes, so graduates receive a University of Buckingham degree alongside their SSST degree. External examiners from British universities check the marking. Master's and doctoral programmes in these fields follow the same model.
Sarajevo Medical School, the university's fastest-growing unit, started in the 2014/15 academic year as the first private medical school in the region taught in English. Clinical teaching takes place at the Clinical Centre of the University of Sarajevo and at 14 partner institutions across primary, secondary and tertiary care. The UniMed University Polyclinic, opened in 2022 inside the main building, brings patients onto the campus itself.
All schools share one campus at Hrasnička cesta 3a in Ilidža, on the western edge of Sarajevo, about ten minutes by car from Sarajevo International Airport. The building opened in 2012 and offers around 15,000 m² of teaching and research space. In September 2026 SSST celebrated its 19th generation of graduates, and alumni now come from more than 40 countries. We at Study in Bosnia help you with the study place, documents and nostrification, housing near the campus, the student visa and the residence permit.

Study programmes
Medicine (Doctor of Medicine, MD). Twelve semesters, six years, taught entirely in English at Sarajevo Medical School. Students meet patients early: an emergency medicine course runs in the first year, and 75 hours of summer practice come on top of the regular clinical component. Pre-clinical subjects are taught in the campus laboratories, clinical subjects at the Clinical Centre of the University of Sarajevo and 14 partner institutions. The curriculum is designed so that students can sit USMLE Step 1 after the second year, and a USMLE preparatory course has been running for five years. Teaching is in small groups.
Dentistry (Doctor of Dental Medicine, DMD). Six years in English. Students start with biomedical sciences, move on to preclinical training in the laboratories and practice rooms, and then into mentored clinical work with growing responsibility. The senior years focus on patient-oriented clinical practice with a high number of treatments, in line with European dental education principles.
Pharmacy (Master of Pharmacy, MPharm). Ten semesters, five years, in English. Summer practice is mandatory from the first year, and students complete internships and placements in public and private pharmacies. The pharmaceutical company Bosnalijek supports students with scholarships and possible internships. Graduates work in community and hospital pharmacy, industry, regulatory affairs, research and clinical pharmacy.
Health Studies (Bachelor of Science). The Department of Health Studies offers bachelor programmes in Physiotherapy, Health Care and Radiological Technology. Practical learning moves from the laboratories into hospitals, clinics, schools and rehabilitation centres.
Computer Science (BSc). Four years (240 ECTS), validated by the University of Buckingham, so you graduate with an SSST degree and a British degree. The programme covers programming, algorithms, software engineering, networks and data, with access to the campus computer labs and the SSST Innovation Lab.
Information Systems (BSc). A dual degree with the University of Buckingham that links computing with business processes, databases and the management of information in organisations.
Game Development and Design (BSc). Three years, developed jointly by the Department of Computer Science and the Sarajevo Film Academy, with an SSST degree and a University of Buckingham degree. Courses include digital animation, 2D and 3D modelling, storytelling, directing, editing and cinematography for games. The independent game and animation studio Prime Time is an industry partner, and the final year includes an internship at a gaming studio.
Economics and Business (BSc). Four years with a University of Buckingham degree. In the second year you choose a major in business or economics, and in the third year a minor in business, economics or finance.
Political Science and International Relations (BA). Four years with a University of Buckingham degree. The programme covers comparative politics, diplomacy, international law, public policy and political theory with a special focus on Europe, plus specialised courses in global migration and geopolitics. Internships with international, regional and local organisations are part of the programme.
English Language (BA in English and Applied Studies). Four years in the Department of Foreign Languages, with an internship in the fourth year.
Film Making (BFA and MFA). The Sarajevo Film Academy, launched in October 2010, teaches film directing fully in English: a three-year Bachelor of Fine Arts and a two-year Master of Fine Arts, both Bologna-compliant, plus a Doctor of Liberal Arts. Students work in an in-house film lab at every level.
Taught master's programmes run over one or two years (60 to 120 ECTS). The Computer Science MSc by Research takes one year: you work one-to-one with a mentor and submit at least one paper to an international conference or journal. SSST also takes part in the joint master's programme in Political Science, Integration and Governance with European partner universities.
Doctoral candidates can study full-time or part-time, with joint supervision by SSST and University of Buckingham professors possible.
Faculties and campus

Every school of the Sarajevo School of Science and Technology sits under one roof. The campus building opened in 2012 next to the Vrelo Bosne springs, with a view of Mount Igman, and offers about 15,000 m² for teaching and research. It has more than 40 classrooms, four auditoriums, four indoor and two outdoor amphitheatres, a library, an IT centre, computer labs, a Digital Media Centre, a bookshop, a restaurant with café and two large terraces. Rooms hold between 20 and 200 people.
The library gives students access to SpringerLink, Nature archives, EBSCO, SAGE Journals and many open-access databases, with staff on hand every weekday. The SSST Innovation Lab supports student and alumni start-ups. Recent projects such as the FutureMinds Lab and the its4health Digital Innovation Hub link the university with companies and hospitals in the region.

Sarajevo Medical School opened in the 2014/15 academic year and is today the largest growth area of SSST. The six-year MD programme is taught in English by professors from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe and the United States, supported by visiting lecturers. Pre-clinical laboratories are in the main building. The clinical years move to the Clinical Centre of the University of Sarajevo, the city's main hospital, plus 14 contracted clinics, hospitals and emergency services.
The school runs its own research programme, in which students learn to present at conferences and publish. The dean is Rasim Jusufović, MD, PhD. Groups stay small. The UniMed University Polyclinic (600 m², opened 2022) in the same building offers internal medicine and cardiology, gynaecology, dermatology, endocrinology, ultrasound, mammography, laboratory diagnostics and dentistry, and works with the medical school on research.

Patients come early. The Department of Dentistry belongs to Sarajevo Medical School and trains doctors of dental medicine in English over six years. Teaching moves from biomedical subjects to preclinical work in well-equipped laboratories and practice rooms, then to supervised clinical treatment of patients. In July 2026 the department marked World Cleft Awareness Day, one of several public health activities its staff and students run each year.

The five-year Master of Pharmacy combines chemistry, biology and pharmaceutical technology with applied work. Students do summer practice from year one and placements in community and hospital pharmacies. Bosnalijek, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, supports the department with scholarships and internships.

Health Studies offers bachelor and master programmes in Physiotherapy and Health Care and a bachelor in Radiological Technology. Practical training takes place in labs, hospitals, rehabilitation centres and community settings. The Pharmaco-Economics unit runs the master's programme in health economics and pharmacoeconomics, which teaches how to judge medicines and health technologies by clinical, economic and social value.

Computer Science is one of the founding departments of SSST. It offers the BSc, an MSc with focus on Big Data, an MSc by Research and doctoral studies, all validated by the University of Buckingham. Students use the two computer labs, the IT centre and the Innovation Lab. Hackathons and EU-funded projects give them contact with local tech companies early on.

Created jointly by Computer Science and the Sarajevo Film Academy, this three-year programme mixes coding with visual storytelling. Students learn animation, 2D and 3D modelling and game cinematography, and finish with an internship at a gaming studio.

The department offers the BSc in Economics and Business, an MBA, MSc degrees in economics and finance, a Master by Research and a PhD. All degrees are validated by the University of Buckingham. Exams are marked by two internal examiners and checked by an external examiner from a British university.
This four-year BA focuses on Europe, diplomacy, international law and public policy, with courses on migration and geopolitics. The department also offers master's degrees in International Law, Diplomacy and Conflict Analysis and Reconciliation, plus a PhD. Graduates go on to careers with EU institutions, the United Nations, NGOs and the diplomatic service.
The department offers a BA in English and Applied Studies and a BA in German Language and Literature. It also teaches the English and German courses that all SSST students take, and Bosnian language classes for international medical students.

The Sarajevo Film Academy opened in October 2010 and teaches film directing fully in English, from the BFA through the MFA to the Doctor of Liberal Arts. An in-house film lab, practical workshops and student productions are part of every year. Students come from more than 40 countries.

Tuition and living costs
Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina pay lower rates. Tuition includes the required course materials and books. The university offers partial and full scholarships for students with excellent results, and student loans through partner banks in Bosnia, with repayment starting after graduation.
Plan a modest budget for the application, translations, nostrification of your school certificate, the student visa, the residence permit and health insurance. These items are paid once at the start, with a smaller renewal of the residence permit each year. We tell you the exact amounts for your country when we prepare your file.
Total: approx. €550 to 750 per month. Ilidža is cheaper than the old town. Food stays affordable. Many students live within walking distance of the campus.
Our estimate for Medicine at SSST: tuition €13,200 × 6 years = €79,200, plus living costs of about €650 × 12 months × 6 years = €46,800. That makes about €126,000 for the whole degree. Dentistry comes to the same figure.
Our estimate for Pharmacy: €66,000 tuition plus €39,000 living costs, about €105,000 over five years.
Our estimate for Computer Science or Economics and Business: €32,000 tuition plus €31,200 living costs, about €63,000 for four years, including a British degree from the University of Buckingham.
City and student life
Sarajevo is a compact capital where Ottoman bazaars, Austro-Hungarian façades and new glass towers stand within one tram ride. Around 275,000 people live in the city, and tens of thousands of them are students. Prices stay friendly. A coffee in a café costs about €1.50, a portion of ćevapi €4 to 6, a lunch menu near the campus €5 to 7.
The SSST campus lies in Ilidža, the green western district of the city, at Hrasnička cesta 3a. Ilidža is known for its spa tradition and for Vrelo Bosne, the park at the spring of the Bosna river, a short walk from the university. Students like the area for its quiet streets, supermarkets, gyms and affordable flats. The International University of Sarajevo is on the same road, so the neighbourhood has a large international student community.
Tram line 3 links the Ilidža terminus with the Baščaršija old town in about 35 to 40 minutes. From the terminus you reach the campus in a few minutes by bus or taxi. Taxis are cheap, and a ride to the centre costs around €8 to 10. Sarajevo International Airport is about ten minutes away by car, which makes trips home quick. By train you reach Mostar in about two hours on one of the most scenic lines in Europe. Zagreb is about six to seven hours by road, Belgrade about six, and the Adriatic coast at Neum or Dubrovnik four to five.
The climate is continental. Summers are warm and sunny, often 25 to 30 °C. Winters bring snow. That is the season for the Olympic mountains Bjelašnica and Igman, which are 30 to 40 minutes from Ilidža, with ski passes far cheaper than in the Alps. In spring and autumn students hike Trebević, ride the cable car above the city or swim in Jablanica lake.
Sarajevo is a safe city for students, with a relaxed street life late into the evening. The Sarajevo Film Festival in August turns the old town into an open-air cinema, and SSST's own Film Academy students are often part of it. Jazz Fest, MESS theatre festival and Winter Festival fill the rest of the year.
We usually advise students to look for rooms in Ilidža or Stup because you save the daily commute and rent is lower than in Centar or Stari Grad. Our local office in Bosnia visits flats before you sign. We also help with the rental contract and your address registration for the residence permit.
