If you want to study in Bosnia from Morocco, here is the direct answer: you choose an English-taught programme, receive a certified invitation letter from the university, apply for a visa D, and then get a residence permit in your university city. Medicine in English starts at €3,500 a year, and life in a Muslim-majority city like Sarajevo feels familiar from day one.

Many families begin by searching for « étudier en Bosnie » in French. One thing to know early: French is not a teaching language at Bosnian universities. Programmes for international students are taught in English, and the local programmes in Bosnian, Croatian or Serbian. If your English is at B2 level, or you are ready to take a preparatory year, Bosnia is a serious option.

Why Moroccan students choose Bosnia and Herzegovina

Moroccan students choose Bosnia and Herzegovina for affordable English-taught degrees, a European Bologna qualification and a culture where Muslim students feel at home.

  • Cost: medicine in English at €3,500 to 9,000 a year at the public universities, and living costs of €400 to 750 a month.
  • Admission: places are awarded independent of your high-school grades at most universities, so a solid bac, motivation and good English matter more than a top mention.
  • Culture: about half of the population is Muslim. In Sarajevo, Mostar, Zenica or Tuzla you hear the call to prayer, eat halal food in almost every restaurant and break the fast at iftar tables in the old town during Ramadan.
  • Europe: Bosnia and Herzegovina is an EU candidate country and part of the Bologna Process. Your degree carries ECTS credits, which helps if you later want a master or specialist training in Europe.
  • Safety and pace: student cities are small and walkable. Parents who visit often say Sarajevo reminds them of Fès: an old Islamic centre, narrow lanes, copper workshops, all surrounded by hills.

Moroccan students in Bosnia are still a small group, and many see that as a plus. You share lecture halls with Bosnians, Turks, students from the Gulf and Europeans, so you speak English all day and your level climbs quickly. Arabic speakers also find each other fast, through mosques, campus clubs and the Gulf families who spend summers in Sarajevo.

Where to study in English

Study medicine in Bosnia from Morocco

Medicine is the main reason Moroccan families contact us. To study medicine in Bosnia, Morocco-based applicants usually compare four public universities: Foča, Banja Luka, Sarajevo and Mostar. All four teach the six-year, 360-ECTS integrated programme in English and have university hospitals.

How the four public options differCity, cost and daily life
+
  • Foča: the lowest fee and a small, quiet town where students live minutes from the hospital. Living costs approx. €400 to 550 a month.
  • Banja Luka: a green, mid-sized city with a large university and an English track in medicine, dental medicine and pharmacy.
  • Sarajevo: the capital, the biggest international community, mosques and halal food everywhere. Higher rents.
  • Mostar: warmer climate, a famous old bridge and a mid-range fee.

Our sister company Medschool Experts compares medical schools across the region in its overview of medicine in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

What we see in practice: Moroccan students who do well in Bosnian medical schools often took a summer English course before starting. The first year is heavy on anatomy and biochemistry terms, and reading them in English from week one makes a real difference.

What it costs to study in Bosnia from Morocco

Visa and residence permit for Moroccan citizens

Moroccan citizens need a visa to enter Bosnia and Herzegovina. For a degree, the right visa is the long-stay visa D, followed by a temporary residence permit for study inside the country.

  1. Invitation letter: after you receive your place, the university issues an invitation letter, which is certified by the Service for Foreigners' Affairs (50 KM, often paid by the faculty).
  2. Visa D: you apply in person at the Bosnian embassy responsible for Morocco, currently in Rabat, usually one to three months before travel. The consular fee is typically about €95 and processing usually takes two to six weeks, depending on the embassy.
  3. Arrival: register your address within 48 hours (the white card, 10 KM).
  4. Residence permit: apply at the field centre in your university city in your first weeks. The fee is 150 KM, and proof of funds is 400 KM (about €205) per month of stay.
  5. Renewal: every year, with a new enrolment certificate and proof of passed exams.

Documents from Morocco usually include your passport, a police record (fiche anthropométrique / casier judiciaire) no older than six months with apostille, your baccalauréat with apostille, health insurance and proof of funds, plus certified translations. Exact requirements depend on your nationality and the embassy, and rules can change by government decision, so we check the current list before you apply. A Schengen, UK or US visa may allow a short visit, but it does not replace the visa D for a degree. Full details are in our student visa guide.

Flights from Morocco to Bosnia

The usual route from Morocco to Bosnia is one stop via Istanbul. Royal Air Maroc and Turkish Airlines fly from Casablanca to Istanbul, and from there Turkish Airlines and AJet fly daily to Sarajevo in about two hours.

Door to door, plan a long travel day. Students from Marrakech, Tangier, Fès or Rabat usually connect through Casablanca first. Book the whole trip on one ticket where you can: if the first leg is late, the airline rebooks you, and you do not need a transit visa in Istanbul when you stay airside.

Recognition in Morocco: the equivalence procedure

A degree from Bosnia and Herzegovina is used in Morocco through the equivalence procedure of the Ministry of Higher Education. You apply after graduation, but you collect the evidence from your first semester.

  • Online file: you submit the application on the ministry's e-equivalence platform, then hand in the paper file in Rabat.
  • Documents: diploma, detailed transcripts, your baccalauréat, programme description with hours and credits, sworn translation into French or Arabic, and proof that you lived in the country while studying.
  • Decision: a sector commission grants equivalence, grants it with conditions, or refuses. Conditions for regulated professions can include an internship, an exam or extra training in Morocco.
  • Medicine: after equivalence, doctors register with the Ordre National des Médecins before practising. Expect the medical file to take longer than a bachelor's file.

Keep your residence permits, entry stamps, clinical logbook and syllabus from the start. The commission compares content and checks on-site study, and those documents are hard to collect years later. Our guide to degree recognition explains recognition in other countries too.
